There are several good reasons why you should consider taking your car in for a regular service check and some of them you probably won't have thought about. So why do people procrastinate and what do you stand to lose if you're being reticent in terms of booking your car in?
Don't Rely on Government Checks
If you have recently been in for a "safety" – aka a vehicle safety check in some states and territories – don't be fooled into thinking that your vehicle has been given an all clear from a service perspective. While the safety check normally looks at tyres, steering, brakes and a few other items, it is not designed to give you peace of mind with regard to your car's performance or reliability. Something could break as a consequence of you thinking that you were "all set."
Don't Think You're Saving Money
If you think you are saving some cash by not taking your car in for a service, this is a false economy. When your vehicle is healthy it will be cheaper to run. Changing the spark plugs, for example, can improve the combustion performance within the engine and save you money on petrol. Not paying attention to major items such as the engine and gearbox will likely lead to a shorter life expectancy for your vehicle as well.
You Might Miss Some Important Checks If You DIY
Even if you fancy yourself as something of an amateur mechanic, it's a good idea to schedule a service nonetheless. The modern-day car is a lot more complicated than it used to be and many of the essential systems are controlled by computerised devices. You will also require access to specific items of equipment or tools that are not generally available for sale to the consumer.
Safety First
Remember also that you are entrusting the safety of yourself, your passengers and the people around you to the performance of your vehicle. This means that you have a duty of responsibility to ensure everything is working properly. This is particularly important when it comes to tyres, especially the modern style of low profile cover. Remember that there is no dashboard warning light to tell you if you have any damage to your tyres and even though the "safety" check might pick up any damage, this could be a long way away.
You Probably Didn't Think of This…
Did you also know that failing to keep up with regular service checks may impact any insurance claim in the future? If you're unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident that might cause your car to be "written off" then the insurance company may well look back at the car's service history (or lack of) in order to determine its value.
