I Like Driving in my Car

Hello, my name is David. Welcome to my blog. There is nothing I like more than hitting the open road and going for a drive in my car. I have always loved everything to do with automobiles. When I was a boy, I had a collection of 208 different toy cars which I would play with all day long. As soon as I was old enough, I began taking driving lessons and the day I passed was the best day of my life. Although I am not a mechanic, my dad taught me lots of neat tricks so I can keep my car in top condition. I hope you enjoy my blog.

Of Curved Trailer Ramps And Why You May Need One For Your Loading Needs

Automotive Blog

A ramp is a handy must-have if you need to load smaller vehicles onto your truck, lorry, or trailer. In terms of design, there are two types of loading ramps available; straight ramps and curved ramps. Straights ramps are the more common. The curved design features a slight upward bend that tries to reduce the sloping angle of the ramp. So why are there curved ramps and what are they for? Read on to find out.

Benefits of using a curved loading ramp

The primary reason why some ramps are designed with a curve is so as to facilitate easier loading and offloading of vehicles with low clearances. Vehicles with low clearances are at an increased risk of suffering underside damage when loading. This is because the underside can easily scratch the edge where the ramp meets the trailer during loading or offloading. However, with curved ramps, the bend reduces the ramp incline. This allows your vehicle to load into the trailer at an angle that is more leveled to the tray of the trailer. In so doing, curved ramps helps to avoid damage to both vehicles: that being loaded and the host vehicle.

On a secondary note, curved loading ramps may offer better structural strength. That is because the upward curve allows the ramp to hold better resistance against the downward force created the loading weight. This means that curved ramps have a lower chance of buckling under heavy weights. They are less likely to crack or bend downwards. However, that be as it may, you should still stick to the manufacturers weight limit when using your curved trailer ramp.

Best applications for curved loading ramps

Curved loading ramps, despite their benefits, are not ideal for every application. The curve makes them unsuitable for track-wheeled machinery such as excavators. Such machines that use tracks require a flat surface to move on, so the curve on such ramps would hinder their smooth movement. Midway through loading, they would end up balancing on top of the pivot created by the curve. Curved loading ramps are more ideal for wheeled vehicles such as cars, all-terrain vehicles, buggies, bikes or lawn mowers.

Curved trailer ramps can be used any type of vehicle, be it a towed trailer, a semi-trailer, a pick-up truck or even a ute.

Need a curved loading ramp? Talk to a ramp manufacturer such as Sureweld and choose between different options such as aluminium trailer ramps and heavier steel ramps.
