Whilst no guarantees can be made in terms of the driver themselves, manual transmissions are indeed less likely to need to be repaired. Both more reliable and more durable, they're the transmission of choice for anyone worried about needing to see a mechanic.
The Advantages
The most obvious benefit of manual transmissions when it comes to reliability is the fact that they are simply far less complex than automatics. This means that less things can go wrong, that there are less components which may need to be repaired. In fact, the only item which may need to be repaired at some point is the clutch, but that's usually only required after many thousands of miles, and is a relatively simple procedure.
Manual transmissions are also easier to maintain, for similar reasons, and since there are fewer things which can go wrong you'll be able to identify and fix exactly what needs fixing extremely quickly.
Additionally, manual transmission systems usually require either gear oil or engine oil to remain lubricated. This doesn't deteriorate anywhere near as quickly as automatic transmission fluid, and many manufacturers suggest that it never needs to be drained and replaced at all. Take into account the fact that a leak is less likely to occur, and lubrication is something you'll probably never need to worry about with a manual transmission.
In terms of the actual drive which they provide, automatics offer a better sense of control which can reduce the chance of a collision. The torque converter in an automatic tends to push a vehicle forward, and the entire system tends to make you feel a little disconnected. That won't happen with an automatic; you'll control the powertrain far more directly.

In terms of reliability and the likelihood of requiring repairs, manual transmission systems don't suffer from any particular disadvantages.
However, while the system may be extremely reliable and durable, that doesn't mean the driver won't sometimes struggle. This tends to be more of a problem with people who are used to driving automatics, but the increased control offered by manual can be detrimental.
The fact is, using manual transmissions is harder since you have more things to think about. In certain situations, such as on hills or during tense manoeuvring, this could cause a collision. However, while still worth mentioning, this is unlikely to occur.
